power steering and alternator belts

hi all i replaced the 2 aux belts today ,the 2 belts pass each other quite close about 3 millimetres apart they were about over 4 millimetres so always been close , can i safely move the power steering belt back some how say with washers on each fixing plate as the alternator can not be moved at all ,i have had the odd instance where the alternator belt can bounce and rub slightly on the edge of the power steering pully it only needs to move a few millimetres , has any one done this before ?

Sounds like the accessory mounting bushings are shot. These are the rubber plugs with a steel tube in the center that the alternator, PS pump, and A/C compressor mount to the bracketry. Used to dampen vibrations, they wear out over time and get deformed, causing the belt misalignments.

Common problem on ALL Volvo engines of this era.

Cheap and easy to replace, new ones will restore proper accessory belt alignments. (jpliddy, you may have done this before, see https://d24t.com/showthread.php?t=1682, ring a bell?)

Wrong way to approach this-- remember that aluminum PS pump mounting bracket is easily prone to cracking. Better not to mess with that.
