i would say oil level sensor.
As i know most of the oil temp sensors are grounded by the part they are bolted on, so they have one lead only. this one have two electrical leads : i think it's a switch : it's switch on or off with because of some electrical resistance caused by the oil level. nothing written on the brass part ?

Quote:
it's often used on german engines. there is nothing in the 2011 online catalogue : it must be an old reference but all their parts are 323 001 etc.... no " vdo" written somewhere ? is it clean enough to see something else ?

There written only a "D1 01" and "326 012". there is no inscription "VDO" or others.
I think I found it. № 11 in this picture (stock code 247509): But how does the indication of low oil level looks? Light bulb? Should I look for such sensor? Thank you very much for your help!

It is an oil level sensor, found only on 760 cars. 740 turbodiesels have the hole in the oil sump, but no sensor.
In the 760, the way it works is that when you first turn on the key (while waiting for the glow plugs), there is an extra oil level light on the dash that comes on. If there is enough oil, then after 2 seconds that light goes off. If the oil is low, then the light stays on until the engine is started, to remind the driver to go out and check the dipstick and add oil as necessary. I can make a video of my 760 to demonstrate if my explanation is not clear. It is not an essential system... if you know how to check your oil using the dipstick, then you have no need for it. ;-)

If it is possible, make a video. This is very interesting.

Yes you found it !
Like it was said by v8volvo it just remember you to add oil if there is not enough. It's quite useless because you are supposed to check the oil regularly..... It's for the lazy bums !

Here is a video I took today of the oil level warning light in operation in my 760 TD:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cxgr6...ature=youtu.be You can see that it turns off after a couple seconds with the key turned to run position without starting engine, indicating correct oil level. Here is another video I should a few days ago, in the middle of the snowstorm we had this past week here in Seattle, when the engine was slightly low on oil. I would have added some, but I didn't want to dig the hood out from under all that snow! It was about half a liter below max, so in the middle of the "normal" hashed section on the dipstick, when the light started staying on... so it does warn the driver well before the oil level gets to dangerously low levels, as might be expected in a Volvo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDK79hKd49k I apologize for the appearance of the car -- it is a project that I am slowly preparing for use in TSD winter rally events, which is why it was the car I chose to drive when the snow fell. Engine and drivetrain are fully sorted but as you can see, the exterior and interior cosmetics have a long way to go....
