hi,
I want to change my tail light on my 740 but I want to install the 90-92 tail light.

not sure if yours is a saloon (sedan) or estate (wagon), (is the 90/92 a 740 or 940?) but if it helps, the tail lights on my '89 740 wagon interchange perfectly with my '95 940 wagon. If their both 740's there should be no reason why they wont fit

Haven't done it myself so cannot say firsthand that they are a bolt-in, but I have seen it done so answer is yes, to my knowledge.

Assume you are talking about a sedan -- wagons are the same all the way from 1985 to 1999.

Yes it is possible.

I took a pair of '91 740 SE rear lamps and put them on my '88 740 GLE saloon.

The wiring was all different colours so took a bit of poking with a multi-meter to find out which wire to connect to which as they have different connectors (so make sure you get the connector with the new lights).

Also, there is a bit of metal that needs removing from the rear panel. basically an upright strip of metal between the 2 sets of bulbs in the old one - this will foul the new ones. I just chopped it off with angle grinder (cover your paintwork though... i forgot and had rusty metal flecks in the paint after that).

Also, the bit of metal you chop out will have the earth point in it, so don't forget to create a new one. I took the paint off surrounding one of the bolt holes for the lamps and put the ring connector under that.
