Well, I sold it.. No more volvo diesel for me..
Finally sold the Volvo... Didn't think I would after how far I had taken it, but I found another diesel that's just as rare and something I've never had the chance to mess with, a 2 stroke Detroit. Had to sell the Volvo to make room for that to be my new daily... Just couldn't justify having the Volvo, multiple air cooled VWs, a Detroit powered truck and my "normal" vehicle (F250). I'll still stop in from time to time to see whats going on and say hello. Don't know if the guy that bought my car will join here, but I recommended it to him. He seamed to be a pretty big diesel enthusiast and was very excited about buying the Volvo, I think it went to a good home.
Its been fun, you all have been a great group of people to share the build up with. Jason

It was fun while it lasted!
I'm a little disappointed in your coverage of said Detroit though, lots of questions unanswered. If it fits in a Volvo size spot, I'm pulling for 55-65 truck with a 3-53. |

Well Jason, I suppose all things must come to an end. The D24T forum was the reason why I kept my Diesel Volvo when things starting getting finicky with it. The expertise and the quality of the information, and sharing of this information, is a very valuable resource.
Good luck with that screamin' Jimmy, I've driven a few 4-53T's and 6v71N's and they are a real hoot! Give us some details on it when you get a chance.

Thanks guys,
its a 453T powered GMC 3/4ton, its a 1978. I would have liked something older but finding a Detroit powered anything these days is tough. That being said, its old enough to look cool but new enough to have some nice comforts that are kinda important in a daily driver, like A/C, power brakes and power steering. It has a new process 5 speed and it will be backed up by a 3 speed brownie that I just picked up off craigslist and am rebuilding now. All its missing are a set of Jakes, but I'm on the hunt. After owning a Mack B61 with a twin stick setup, I have been itching to have a twin stick truck to grind gears in, and the sound of that 453T is going to be awesome... It was time for a new challenge, I enjoyed the Volvo for quite a while, but the build is part of the fun. Jason

Nah, just on craigslist. Really wanted to sell it to someone local so I could go over everything on the car with the potential buyer.. I hate out of state sales with old stuff like this, someone else's idea of "nice" and my idea may be different, and if they come hundreds of miles just to be disappointed in some way, well I'm not fond of that. Besides I had lots of parts to go with it, a whole other engine, etc...

Jason, sorry to see you leave the fold but sounds like a cool new project! I've got a friend who is into Detroits and no question they sound pretty cool... Almost as good as a D24T, not quite, but almost. He has a 4-53 in an old 1930s wooden open-hull fishing dory and a 3-71 in a log skidder on an island in the San Juans. (You would like this guy, he also runs a lumber mill he put together powered by an aircooled VW motor.) I've been on the boat and listening to the blower whine is pretty fun. Though hopefully you're ready to put up with all the Detroit jokes -- what's the world's most efficient engine for converting fuel into smoke and noise?? Etc...
Around where I grew up most of the Detroits got used in marine applications and many were large multi-cylinder units, the ones that really make some music. If you are ever out in the Seattle area be sure to take a ride on the passenger ferry from downtown to Vashon Island. About a 20-minute trip and you get to listen to two 16V-71T's screaming the whole way. One time I talked the engineer into showing me around below deck while the thing was going full tilt across Elliott Bay. 32 cylinders, 4 turbos, I'm surprised I can still hear at all... Good luck and hope you will still stop by around here from time. Last edited by v8volvo; 10-13-2013 at 03:01 PM. |

I just talked on the phone with the new owner of my old car... After the guy I sold it to sold it after only a few months. He told me he was probably going to have to sell it because of the contract on his house falling through.. Anyway, the new owner joined up here, and seems very excited about the car and keeping it going while doing some more restoration type work with it, maybe a paint job and such. Glad its gone to a good home. I see the forum has continued to add more members which is great.
