Turbo replacement
I'm fairly certain my turbo is slowly getting worse - hearing lots of D24 videos online there is a definite whistle - mine sounds a lot more "whiney" than that - I've always had a whine like a boost leak that I've never traced down. Also, took my inlet off the other day and there seems to be even more oil in the boost pipes!
So, if there an alternative turbo I could use - a modern equivalent? I.e. something that I could source easily over here from a breakers? I've seen plenty of Garrett GT2256's (I assume I would have to go for non-variable). GT2256 sounds very small compared to T3, but they seem to be used on 3.0ltr BMW diesels, and 2.9ltr Land Rover TD6's. Any thoughts?

I really like the idea of a VNT-type turbo. George (v8volvo) had a 240-series wagon with a D24+T setup he was going to modify to use a turbo from a VM Motori R428 engine. IIRC he was planning to adopt a solenoid valve from a Chrysler application to control the turbo's vane actuation. I know this isn't exactly an appropriate answer, but if George has made progress on this project it would be a worthwhile endeavor for you to look into. Perhaps George could chime in?

Very interesting! I think a VNT is exactly what these engines need to be honest to cure the lag. The lag doesn't really bother me on motorways and large roads, but round towns with roundabout after traffic lights after roundabout, and on small windy roads it does get a little annoying - and you end up constantly smoking the guy behind out before it spools!
I'd definitely be interested if someone has found a way to control it well!

I used gpopshop.com to rebuild my T3/T4 for my D34T.
The owner Jim was very helpful. They rebuilt the whole thing and with a little machining, put a larger impeller in it and it should flow about 20% more. It cost around $600, but it is as good as new. I haven't fired up the engine yet, but the new impeller turned A LOT easier than when I took it off. Since my D24T is in a 7000 pound six wheel Pinzgauer, i have a lot of lag no matter what. Would like to see that mate, think a VNT turbo on a D24T would really help that low end acceleration!
