Default Compression Tester

Do you think this compression tester would be any good?

Most I see are the full kit with loads of adapters and they're about £100+. I only want to use it to get an idea of how good my engine is. I would like to do a manual conversion on mine, but the state of my compression readings will decide if I find a good gearbox, or an engine and gearbox to drop in....
