Thanks to you both for the replies!
I definitely want to keep things as simple as possible and I will adjust the timing to .85 or or a little higher (.95 on my 1.6TD) and either jumper the switch on the strut tower or add a wire from the existing solenoid. But first, I still need a camshaft and some time to inspect for other damage caused by the broken timing belt.
