Default 85 745 GLE turbo diesel

After much deliberation and some Q&A here, I decided to pull the trigger and pick up a 85 745 turbo diesel I found on the local Craigslist. It's a little dirty and a little rusty, but it runs great and rides really nice...

Doesn't look too bad, what did you end up giving for it?

$1200. Got some decent extra parts with it too: injection pump, injection timing belt, window regulators, four good snow tires, an extra rim (one is slightly bent), some veggie oil filters/strainers from Greasecar.com, and some other miscellaneous stuff he had. I even got the original window sticker with it, and it's in super shape, which I thought was really neat.

The worst rust is on the front passenger door as you can see, but I'm going to use the car to learn body work as well as tinkering with the diesel a bit. It seems to run really, really nice though. It feels like the suspension could use an update, but it does ride pretty darn well for as old as it is. It's just a neat car all around. My friend kept laughing and saying how butt ugly it is, but I know it'll grow on him!

Is it a stick or automatic? '85 was the only year you could get a stick shift TD in a wagon. They are hard to find. If you got one then you scored. Well, even if it's an automatic you scored anyway cause it's a diesel Volvo...

$1200 is a good price -- if the extra injection pump you got with it is in working shape then it was worth almost that much alone. Just make sure the timing belt is not about to break, run good oil and filters, don't overheat it, and keep the rust under control and it will probably be a sweet ride for a good while longer.

Yep it has the M46 in it. I'm going to change the timing belt before I drive the car anywhere else since I don't know its history, as well as change the oil (Shell Rotella 5W-40 synthetic) & filter and give the car a thorough going-through and make sure everything is in good working order.

Sounds good, keep us updated with the progress... I'm jelous of the M46 wagon, I had one to buy, but my wife said no way.. She can't stand the wagon as she had bad childhood memories being driven around by here mom in a diesel wagon in the 80s. I had to settle for a sedan.
