Graf PA422 has a cast iron impeller. Here's the VW Audi part # 069 121 004X.

The plastic impeller pumps have been OK in my (very limited, low sample size). I have one of those in my 1983 760 that I installed over 10 years ago as an experiment, and have been running with no issues since then.

HOWEVER, plastic impeller water pumps on VW TDI engines are known to have a very serious and common problem of the impeller coming loose on the pump shaft and then failing to spin, which of course then causes immediate overheating and can lead to engine destruction.

The D24/T water pump impeller design is much more beefy than the TDI design with a lot more "meat" around the area of the impeller where it meets the shaft, so it might not be as likely to have this problem even when the impeller is made of plastic. But, all the same, since metal impeller pumps are not hard to find, the safest bet is probably to stay with one of them.

As Goteborg Vapenfabrik mentioned, Graf water pumps are known to have the cast impeller. Hepu pumps do too, at least the last time I bought one.

thanks for your thoughts , im still thinking of returning the water pump ,
brickwerks here have a KOLBENSCHMIDT make with a cast metal impeller, so im tempted to go for that as its a german brand too , my original VW pump has 5 robust gains on the impeller , seems like they have moved to 7 vans now for some reason ,

Is the one with the 7 vanes a thin stamped steel impeller or a heavy cast iron impeller?

You want the cast impeller even if there are fewer vanes. They seem to work better. As I recall, the stamped impellers have more vanes but are smaller in diameter.

Kolbenschmidt is a very well known high quality brand, I am sure that would be a good option.

hi V8volvo
thats what im thinking of getting .although the kolbenschmidt has 7 cast vanes im told by supplier , BRICKWERKS, it does look as if the 5 vane pumps woud push the coolant better on my old pump , that pump did 150000 miles with the coolant being replaced at 3/4 year intervals with genuine volvo coolant you can view the BRICKWERS pump online too .

There's a genuine Volvo D24 water pump #1257185 currently on EBay Germany. A little on the pricey side but you know what you are getting. Sorry I don't care for makings links.

Volvo part # 8692839 brings up a US EBay seller who has six Graf water pumps for just $34.95 each free domestic shipping. Listed as Volvo 850/S80/S70/V70 with 2.5L turbo diesel 1996-2001. You could ask what they would ship to the UK for and what the impeller is made of. That sure sounds like a deal.
