Yes I have done it, at approx. 170,000 miles.

The filter is just a coarse screen, it was spotless.

There was a little bit of sludge on the pan magnets.

While removing the pan allows some inspection (for sludge and other debris in the pan) there is some risk. As you mentioned, the dipstick tube connection can be rusted or otherwise stubborn and get damaged during removal. Also, the pan bolt clamps are slightly different depending on position, easy to get mixed up, and difficult to keep in position when tightening evenly.

First of all, you should verify the need for new fluid. What is the color of the current?

If warranted, I would lean towards a simpler fluid flush, using the cooler lines at the radiator for supply/discharge.

+1. Or even just a drain and refill, or maybe a couple cycles of them over a period of time. That might be the lowest risk of all. The cooler line flush method is easy but does take a little bit of careful attention and is best done with a helper. Can be done alone also, but it's a lot of things to manage all at one time.

As was noted, there is really no reason to drop the pan to change the "filter" as it is really just a mesh screen and won't be in need of replacement.

Is the growl in low gear definitely from the trans? Could it be the rear end? Are both the transmission and the axle full of fluid?

hello thank you both for your valued advice,
im thinking now doing what you suggest just changing oil in stages as i have always done .
i cleaned the old oil filter placed it in a tray of cellulose thinners and a thin paint brush got the tiny fileings out of the filter .
the growl is more when engine cold in low gear so problem oil needs warming up
then it sounds better .

So you did already drop the pan down and remove/clean that metal mesh filter?

If that is the case then you are probably better off just replacing the filter. Don't want to accidentally introduce any foreign chemicals like the cellulose thinner into the transmission. The material of the transmission clutch packs could be damaged by exposure to anything other than the correct type of ATF.

Replace the rubber gasket too of course if you remove the pan. And clean up the inside of the pan and the magnets.

But we thought you said you had not yet taken the pan off and were asking how it should be done??

hi im sorry for confusion !
the oil filter is off the service car had 11 years ago by auto mechanic i asked for the old one and just kept it on the shelf .
only just cleaned it when i got thinking about the auto box service it looks in good condition .
i had a look under the car and saw the filler pipe nut has to be released too
like you say it could be sized on so this is where i am might just carry on the regular series with the correct ATF oil .
i have been using dextron 2
