Does it whine when you accelerate or decelerate? Is the whine loud?

If it does not make a loud noise when running, I would put in some good oil and carry on.

Sorry for the late reply.

The forum didn't notice to me you answered.
It doesn't work anymore i don't know why.

I never used this car so i can't tell.
I've worked a lot on it but never drove it.

I saw this problem while i serviced the differential to be sure to start using the car with all checked.

I bought some (castrol) axle oil 80w90 api gl5 as the technical book say.

I need a gasket to close it.

i really don't want to burst the diff while using the car.
i don't need this problem.

If i weld the cross shaft in it's place ?
What do you think ?

Default Rear axle fluid question

I would like to know what the proper fluid for my rear axle is
but
I have no idea what exact setup my car currently has.

I don`t know anything about the rear end actually.

I have a book here that is the 1988 edition of the Haynes Manual for a 740 car,
but
it actually is for the 740 models with the gasoline engine (I have no idea if that matters)
and
it does not specify the fluid in the rear axle section of the book: `info not available at the time of printing`.

Then I found a some summary at the front pages, saying this (quoted, in red):

REAR AXLE
Except limited slip differential
Gear Oil SAE 90 EP to API GL 5 or 6

Limited slip differential
Special Volvo oil (No 1 161 276-9), or gear oil as above with Volvo additive (No 1 161 129-0)

But again, this is for the 740 GASOLINE car in 1986 or maybe 1988 too.

Im not sure what to use for my car because I have no idea what kind of a setup I have.
Just for safety`s sake, can somebody here confirm about this?
Maybe you know what exact brand and viscosity to buy.
Thanks!

PS. How can I check and confirm about what exact rear end the car currently has? I`ll try to look for a plate but I think the bottom of the car has been coated with some rubbery substance for rust protection plus there is dirt obviously. I don`t recall seeing any plates or markings there, though I didn`t really care to inspect thoroughly.
Maybe there`s a plate with the year, type and gearing; somewhere.

Default I used Valvoline 75W90 fully synthetic gear oil for the rear axle. IDK...

Unfortunately I couldn`t figure out what exact rear end this car has but I want to know.
I`ll be glad to get good advice from forumers here!

I decided to replace the rear axle fluid and chose to use Valvoline 75W90 fully synthetic gear oil. If this was a mistake then I will redo the project and flush it out.

The system uses 1.7qt of fluid (this is what a 740 gasoline old 1988 manual suggested for a 740 gas car but my car is a td, ... IDK) which I could only add all in by lifting the rear of the wagon up (tow hitch comes handy).

I had to use a torch and hammer to get both plugs out. This rear axle fluid job hasn`t been done for a long time.
At least I had about the same amount of fluid in there what is necessary though, I don`t think fluid was missing, or very minimal.
The old fluid looked very dark, dark green actually, it was/or looked thicker than the Valvoline I used to fill it up.
The drain plug had some fine metal paste on it. I did wonder how it looks inside but did not check because I had no new gasket for the cover. Next time...

I read that for certain types of rear axles special additives are suggested to be used but again I have no idea what this Volvo has.

PS. The Valvoline gear oil bottle said GL 5 on the rear label.
