D24T into Volvo 960??
I have found a 1996 Volvo 960 Wagon for sale locally for a very good price. I am thinking about buying it to swap the motor out of my 1984 into it. How hard do you think this would be? Both cars are automatics and pretty much the same chassis. Any ideas?

OMG, that car is pure sex! I googled Vallakra 2009 hoping to find some pictures of his engine bay but only came up with this:
Only thing that I can see is that he used an N/A D24 intake manifold : ( Also found this hot 245 (apparently also a diesel?): It looks a lot like mine except for the flat hood, sideskirts and clear corner lenses. I was on the fence about Pegasus wheels on a 240, but this has pushed me over to the "do not want" end of the spectrum. This really gives me some inspiration! It's so cool to know that people in Scandinavia are still messing with green blocks. Anyway, didn't mean to thread-jack. Just got excited! |

That car is solid! So thats a 240? Man it looks good. Newer body style and nice looks along with our beloved powertrain.
I need to move to europe... Jason

I think the swap would be a bolt-in. You'd need to bolt in quite a bit of stuff, including front crossmember, front springs, fuel system, and do some wiring (not much, mostly taking stuff out from the B6304's FI system and electronic tranny control system).... but I see no reason why it would not work. The only thing that might require some fabrication will be the driveshaft, since a 96 960 will have an independent rearend. You might be able to mate the front section of the 2-piece driveshaft from the D24T car (which has a live axle) to the rear section of the 960's current driveline to make one that mates the ZF tranny to the independent rear, but if it were me I would have it done by a shop to ensure that the balancing, phasing, etc were all correct. Otherwise the vibes can be nasty.
Some point in the next few years the D24T+manual trans from my '83 is going to find a new home in a '92-'94 965 (the last years of the live rear axle being used). I think the combination of the diesel engine in a really nice later body would be a great result.

Actually scratch one of the things I said -- the post-'94 960s used a front (and rear) suspension system that was quite different from the earlier cars, more along the lines of the new FWD stuff that had just come out on the 850 series around then. Doubt the HD diesel front springs would swap onto the '96 car's struts, though you could give it a shot. Another reason I want to stick with an earlier 960 body, to avoid this conflict. I don't know if the stock 960 springs would be stiff enough to support the weight of an iron block straight six D24T. The B6304 engine in there now is all-aluminum so probably lighter by comparison.

Would not be such a big problem to find lowering/stiffer springs to a 960... there is tons of aftermarket parts for volvo´s here in sweden.
If I go to the advertising site "blocket" and search for volvo parts I get about 1600 hits if I search for 940 parts it is about 300 hits, 960 150 hiits and so on... I might buy a 960 series front end for my car toghether with the rear bumper...

The blue sedan in the pictures does not have a D24T in it... most likely a D5252, aka a 2.5L 5-cylinder Volkswagen TDI as found in european Audis, Eurovans, and Volvo 850/S70's. Count the runners on the intake manifold and look at the profile of the cam cover...

The white 245 with D24TD did my friend build, think he sold the car for 2 month ago.
Here is his site http://www.garaget.org/mr_soot And Simons car is from the beginning a 940TDI, but he have changed the engine, now its a D5252, 5cyl turbodiesel. i think he have pulled out 196 HK / 457 NM @ 2 600 RPM, the car is very sweet. And here is simons site http://www.garaget.org/?car=88943 Sounds lovely http://www.garaget.org/video/fi27ts1gvuml |
