Electric Vacuum Pump
Any recommendation's for an electric vacuum pump. Mine is pretty noisy and it looks like the previous mechanic gooped it up pretty good to get it sealed up. I was thinking about taking the one off my 85 and trying it to see if that's the loud knocking I'm hearing. what do you think?

I'm not sure which electric pump to recommend, however a D24 list member was happy to ditch his Hella electric vacuum pump when Tom Bryant announced he would take rebuildable ones on an exchange basis. He can be reached at Thosbryant@gmail.com.

This weekend I'm going to try and take the vacuum pump off my 85 and try it on the 84 to see if that's where the noise is coming from. The one on the 84 that seems noisy has goop all around the seal but doesn't leak the 85 must still have the O ring and there is no sign of leakage either. My question is which rod should I use in the 84 if there is no visible wear on the existing rod? Should I keep the rods with the existing pumps or the existing engines?
Thanks |

Most important is to reinstall the rod in the orientation it was originally. The end contacting the cam and the cam have worn in to each other and is best to not introduce a new surface to wear in.

Is there a special wrench to get the bottom bolt loose? I have quite a few box wrenches but doesn't seem to be the right offset.
thanks for your help |

Bent a box end with a torch. The glo-plug cable was in the way. It was flat and when straight across behind the pump. On my 85 the cable has a loop in it and was no problem getting the lower nut off.

OK but just take care not to break of the mounting ears on the vacuum pump. It can happen if you don't tighten/loosen the nuts equally.

Thanks. I had taken the valve cover off also to install a new gasket. Was able to turn the cam and see if the lobe was pushing on it or not. The push rod and cam show no wear at all. There was no O ring on the pump that's why they had so much goop. Getting acquainted with this motor this weekend was great. Got the 27mm socket for the crank and checked the valve clearance. Intakes were all at .152 but no more and exhaust were tight at .257 cold. I will have to get that checked out hopefully that's where the knocking is coming from.
