940 td auto from Coventry England

Bought for £310 on EBay as a cheap alternative to hiring a car for 6 weeks The idea was to sell/scrap it at the end,but it is getting under my skin and I now want to keep it! 1 84 year old owner from new,220,000 miles, last service was £2400! Poor starting and smoke on acceleration only problems. I have changed 5 Glowplugs and am looking for an Octopus for number 6. Have wound pump in to stop smoke, which works, but car is dog slow and tickover down to 500rpm. Overall a great practical classic. |

Sounds like a decent car Mate. Try and find someone who is used to tuning 300tdi Discoveries as they have the same injector pump etc. They will likely sort you out. There are better adjustments to make on the top aneroid part of the Inj pump so you can wind the centre screw back out a bit to restore a bit of poke and bring the idle back up. The TD engine with automatic is normally respectably quick.
Changing the glow plug no.6 is a bit of a bugger but if you loosen and not remove the bus bar nut (slide the copper plate out from under the loosened nut) and then work on the plug from the drivers side with a 10 mil fork spanner, leaning over the valve cover, it can be done. cheers, Steve |

Looks like a nice car, these cars if set up correctly are quite fast and more than able to keep up with traffic. I gave a BMW 320 TD coupe "177bhp" a good rum for it money off a round about "it crepped away" Ive had the head off mine, put a steel head gasket on it, new head bolts - currently running 1.5 bar and lots of fuel. It still averages 38 MPG and give a big smiles. this offers tricky driving conditions as I found coming out of Cov by the round about by tesco - the back end stepped out big time!
Stick with it as they are rewarding when they are set up correctly. |

Thanks for comments,especially pump info.
Was going to scrap it after head gasket problems But have repaired and running better than ever. Need a silver bootlid to make perfect. |
