Default Injection pump belt replacement

I noticed my car was running rough today and noticed that the injection pump belt was missing several teeth! It was replaced about 15,000 miles ago by the previous owner. Any idea why the teeth would be stripped in so few miles? The repair manual calls for several special tools to do the job. Are these really needed or can I get by without them.

Theres a good chance the belt was too tight. Its not easy to get the belt tension right as its necessary to loosen the bolts and raise the pump. A tight belt will hasten the wear on the shaft bushing and seal causing the pump to lose its prime overnight. This makes starting very hard.

Yes you really do need the special tools to time the pump. In Oregon you are likely to find someone who has them and enlist their service.

I know someone who has the tools to adjust the pump. My Volvo service manual calls for tool 5199 and 5201 to remove the camshaft rear sprocket. Can I just use a strap wrench or a prybar to hold the sprocket in place or do I need the tool?

You need a good solid way to stop the sprocket from turning and a 19mm box end wrench (ring spanner).

Dont tighten hard while you are making adjustments. Wait until you are sure its set right.

The front of the camshaft bolt is very tight, you can react against that while final tightening. Its on a taper so It wont move whereas the back sprocket is just a clamped fit. I actually loosen the rear bolt while holding the camshaft with that front bolt. The rear always loosens first, at least it has for me.

Move the engine to TDC before doing anything

Anyone have any preferences on the brand for the belt? I was going for Goodyear or Gates.

I ordered the Gates belt today. It will be here Tuesday morning, then the fun begins!

I just finally got some time off so I could do this and ran into something strange. I started the car up to let it run for a while before I did the work and it started up fine and then died after about 1 minute. I went to restart it and now it won't start. It cranks fine, the fuel filter is full of fuel and the glow plugs are functioning properly. When I go to start it smoke comes out the tailpipe and it acts like it wants to start. If the injection pump belt skipped a tooth because of some being missing would that throw the timing off? I am kind of puzzled at this point.

Yes it would, and it probably did. You need to set the engine at TDC and get a pump lock tool if you don't have one to lock the injection pump. I would be willing to bet if you just set the engine at TDC and try to stick the pump lock tool in, it will be a tooth off or better.
