Need good M46 tranny
Looking for a good quiet M46 transmission close to Tennessee. 931 801 2596.

You probably know this but the M46 from the gasser Volvo's is the same as for the diesels except that the pilot bearing for the flywheel is different....just in case you need just the g/box part. The diesel shaft has a sleeve on it to increase the needle bearing ID and the recess in the crankshaft accepts a larger bearing OD, 18 mm if I recall correctly. I used a gasser g/box myself and sleeved the ID of the crankshaft instead.

I'd heard at one time that they are identical except that first gear is lower in the diesel version. I have a diesel unit here that I'd part with but I'm in Colorado. PM me if you get that desperate. Good Luck!

To my knowledge the diesel and gasser transmissions are identical with the exception of the increased input shaft OD on the diesel units courtesy of a sleeve that can be removed, as Steve mentioned. The gearing, as far as I am aware, is the same. The only other difference you may encounter is that some gasser Volvos use rubber flex discs in the driveline rather than universal joints. I encountered this when I converted my 1986 740 turbo gas wagon to diesel power using the drivetrain out of a 1985 745 TD -- I had to use the driveline out of the diesel wagon because the gasser driveline was set up for rubber guibos, and needed a different output flange on the transmission.
So worst case if you start with a gasser tranny you will need the input shaft sleeve and may also have to swap to a different output flange for use with a diesel driveline. If you have no M46 at all this may be a problem for you, but assuming you are starting with a broken but complete diesel tranny, you should have everything you need to make a gasser unit bolt right in. Oh yeah, there is one other difference you may run into, not related to diesel vs gas..... as you may already know, late 200 series and all 700 series use an electronic speedo drive off the differential whereas earlier 200 series (through late 1980s?) used a mechanical cable drive off the tranny tailshaft housing.... so depending on what your new transmission came out of, you may need to do some work to make it compatible to run the speedo in your older 245. Steve, what did you do about a pilot bearing for the gasser trans you swapped in? After sleeving the crank ID, was there room for a different pilot bearing of some kind? It would be nice to be able to use a sealed pilot bearing rather than the Audi-spec open needle bearing that Volvo ultimately used.... but since space is at a premium I assume that is not an option. And in any case I would figure that if it was possible to use a better bearing, Volvo, which itself began life as a bearing company (it was an early spinoff of SKF if my memory serves correctly), would have done so....

I dont have a record of which bearing I used but it would not be hard to relocate. overdrive switch on transmission, m46
Do you know whether or not all m46 transmissions share the same/identical overdrive switch?
