New here from sunny warm lake mary florida
Hey all,
Im a diesel mechanic on marine engines an i picked up a D24T volvo engine that i want to put in one of my small boats that has a volvo penta outdrive on it.This engine i assume the timing belt broke and it has some bent valves.I got the pan off and the crank isnt broke and the cam isnt broke either. It also looks like maybe the engine overheated cause there was a bunch of sandy type of goo in the cooling passages where the water pump came out.Now i need to get the head bolts out. They are the 11mm star or torx types.Question is who sells the tool?A Triple Square Socket Bit, 10mm, 12 Point male socket bit wont fit,its too small. Welcome!
Your looking for a 12mm triple square for those head bolts. KD tools sells just the bit for VW engines, VIM tools sells a complete triple square set for $40 or so.

I got the tool and got all the head bolts out except for one.Its stripped.Whats the best way to deal with this? Its the head bolt at the end of the head where the flywheel is.

Sometimes pounding the socket into it for awhile will help it free up, like 10 minutes with a 3lb hammer.
If that doesn't work, drill the head till its a stud. |

Just for future reference, would probably have been a good thing to make sure you were able to loosen all 14 bolts before removing any of them... not the greatest thing to have all of them out except for one which is still fully torqued. They should be loosened/removed starting at the outsides and moving towards the middle, so the situation you are in is not ideal. Probably won't cause you any trouble, more of a good-karma thing, and in any case I know it doesn't help to mention it now , but just worth noting for the sake of posterity...

i found a diamond bit in my shop and it took the top off that headbolt like it was hot butter.got the head off.no holes in any pistons and no bent or broken valves.looked like a lot of carbon buildup was keeping it from turning over all the way around.no scored cylinders either so the little volvo engine will live again. It has a steel head gasket on it too.
