Default Headgasket gone - MLS replacement?

Anyone know where I can get an MLS headgasket for my bus?

Was leaking oil, so replaced the head bolts, and now it's filling the coolant tank with oil - was a long shot!

So - I need a new headgasket to replace mine - it's a fibre 2 notch one on at the moment, and I need any special tools required - any clues where and what I will need for this?

Cheers,
Ian

From Tasca or directly from a volvo dealer if there is one in your area. Part numbers for the gaskets are listed in the engine section.

Ok, thanks, I found the 3 standard Volvo part numbers for the headgaskets on here, and it said the standard part numbers will be the metal ones now, not the fibre ones. Is this the same as the MLS that people refer to though?

Had a look on Tasca but couldn't find it on there!

What will I need in the way of special tools?

Yes the MLS gasket means multi layer steel, which is the metal one. Your going to need a few tools like cam counter hold, the cam lock tool, a 27mm socket for the crank bolt, and a crank counter hold to be able to tighten the crank bolt again. You can get away without the belt tensioner, just install it again with the same amount of deflection. Make sure you replace the water pump while your in there. There are a few write ups on the forum on head gasket/timing belt jobs, do a search and you'll find more info and reading.

Ok cheers.

I've spoke to a local motor factors who can get a steel 2 notch for £94. Volvo say £60+vat but he doesn't know if that is Fibre or Metal - he says the only way to find out is to create a technical query and send it to Sweden - which he says could take several weeks to come back...!! Have also emailed Tasca.

Re: Tools, I have found Draper sets 57629 and 63397 listed as special tools for Volvo 760TD/VW LT35 2.4 TD. Could you have a look and see if that is everything I'm likely to need, or if there is anything missing (except 27mm socket which I already have, and screw-in DTI which I have on lend):

57629 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DRAPER-57629-1...item20b0997110
63397 - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DRAPER-63397-Z...item2a09913a38

Well... Tascas seem fairly unhelpful so far... all they have done so far is try and sell me a B234F headgasket, which is the 2.3 16v PETROL lol.

I am sorry, your VIN # will not load in my system.

<Me:>

Can you check without using the VIN number? It's a 1990 Volvo 760 turbo diesel, with the "2 notch" headgasket. (same 2.4 6 cylinder engine as the old VW LT35 van.

<Tasca:>

The part # you need is 1378646

<Me:>

On your website that part number says:

“Head gasket, all models - 2.3l, b234f 1991”

The B234F engine code is a 2.3 16v petrol.

I need one for a D24T engine code, 760 Diesel.

FYI (well, at least for any UK guys round here) I managed to get an Ajusa MLS 2 notch (they stock others aswell) from "Engine Parts UK" for £35!! They also had the headbolts (£23) and the inlet/exhaust gaskets and arrived next day. Highly recommend them, great service!

That works out to only around $53 USD for an MLS headgasket! I wonder if that place ships to the US? Last time I bought a MLS gasket from one of the "discount" online volvo dealers, it ran me near $230

They ONLY come one way from Volvo, and that is MLS. There was a TSB about this a few years back. The only way to get a fiber one is to order an aftermarket one. All of the OE Volvo ones are MLS.
