1982 244 d24
This is a few pictures of the project I acquired. My wife and I drove, on Black Friday, from Claymont, DE to Richmond, VA, got a U Haul Trailer, loaded the car and drove to Westport, PA. It was a 650 mile trip. Next is to get Eli's car!
This weekend I re-sealed and installed an injector pump (original was trashed due to the bio diesel the car had in it), did the front and rear timing belt, and put in 6 new Bosch glow plugs. Hopefully next week I can change out a few coolant lines and then get it running by push starting it (starter seems to crank too slow even with a new battery... may need a starter). I'll change the oil with some Mobil 1 5w30 and with any luck it'll be good to go. |

Its not too bad. It was a VA car its whole life so rust is a minimum. The floors are pretty solid. It was repainted the original color at some point. While not a great paint job, it could be worse. The drivers seat is torn up and I am looking for a matching replacement which is proving to be a challenge. I am hoping I can get the darn thing running this coming weekend! I think I am going to have to pull/push start it the first time as I suspect the rings are gunked up from cranking it and the compression is low as a result. Also the oil was kind of sludgly under the valve cover. With my help, it should run again. It sat because either the glow plug relay failed (I repaired it by cleaning it and soldering some connections in it) or because of a bad batch of fuel/bio (original fuel system was trash).

If the oil is all sludgy and your thinking the rings are coked up, you should think about running some bg 109 through it. Supposed to be really good stuff, I used it on my 99 powerstroke and it made a difference... (it had crapped up injectors and passages I suspect from lots of sitting, I bought it when it was 7 years old with 38k miles on it)

I may try that. In the past, with D24's, I have changed the oil over to Mobil 1 5w30 with great experience. It tends to clean up the rings, etc. after about 1000-2000 miles. I usually change it around 500-1000 miles.
