No oil draining out during oil change

Hi there,

I'm working on my first Volvo. I'm very much a novice mechanic. This is my first time changing oil on a car myself ever. I have a 1984 760 GLE D24T. It has mostly sat for the last several years with the previous owner. I am trying to change the oil.

I removed the oil plug and nothing came out. I read that you are supposed to let the engine warm up first, however as this is one of the first tasks that I am doing on the vehicle, and the temperature gauge is not working... I am hesitant to let the engine run.

I'll try to change the oil filter first and see if that helps but any advice would be appreciated.

Maybe it's out of oil? Or maybe the oil has geled up somehow? Things I read online...

Hey, welcome to the world of Volvo (VW-Audi) 2.4L indirect injection Diesel engines. We are all going to keep our fingers crossed for you that this is something not serious. Don’t start the engine until you figure out if there is a safe level of oil in the oil pan. The oil drain is at the rear of the cast aluminum oil pan, how about checking the oil on the dipstick, there is a flattened area at the end of the dipstick, the oil level should be in that area.

Update:

I reinserted the oil plug.

I then removed the old oil filter and a little old (black) oil started coming out.

I then started pouring the new oil into the engine to see if it would come out of the oil filter hole. No new oil came out.

I installed the new oil filter and poured all of the new oil in (7 liters).

I removed the oil plug again and I got around 2 liters of old oil to come out.

None of the new oil seemed to ever come out, even with the oil plug off.

I would assume that this means that something is plugging up the system?

Also, there was a plug, a spring, and another metal cylinder piece. I don't know if I reinstalled them correctly. I made a sketch, seen in the link below...

Thank you Goteborg Vapenfabrik! After I put in the new oil per my update above, I checked the dipstick and it has the proper amount of clean oil in it. I'm going to wait to start the engine until I can look more into the cooling system. I think that would be best?

Ok looks like I was just unscrewing the wrong bolt / plug... I was in the front of the engine near the oil filter and needed to be at the rear...

Hey again, that isn’t the oil pan drain, that is the access for oil pump pressure regulating spring. Do not start the engine! You may have lost critical parts required for making oil pressure. Until you are certain all these parts are installed in the correct order, do not proceed.

Thank you. I was trying to figure out what the spring and piston were for exactly. I'll look and try to find a proper diagram that shows them.

Ok, I found the diagram of the oil pressure relief valve in the service manual.

I feel dumb but at least I know what happened now. Thanks for your help.

I remember to do this very mistake when I had my 240, 3 years ago. So dont feel dumb, when one is not raised with these skills, one should not feel shame to do that kind of errors

Great job getting the pressure relief valve put back together! Understand that used diesel oil is very messy and can stain hands and clothes! Gloves and old long sleeve shirts can be your best friend.
