Default Nothing beats using fully synthetic oil from a quality brand. + Oil change intervals!

I think there is no significant difference,
you can use those filters without having to worry about your engine.

I have been using several different types of oil filters in my 1985 d24t (and my other diesels) since I purchased a large box of oil filters from a VW diesel/d24/d24t person who also happened to be a Volvo master (diesel-) mechanic with lots of d24 backup parts.

Mann filter, made in Germany.
W950/4

I like these because the green/yellow box is super retro looking and they are labeled 740/760 D24T on top. This must have been the most common filter they used on the d24 besides the white color Volvo filter.
The green Mann box also mentions part number 1328162 on the added sticker.
This one is currently 25years old, manufactured in 1998 then re-stickered in 2001. (Also mentions part number 4597 which perhaps refers to a filter made by Motorcraft...)

I like it that it has a large top and you can grab that with a combination wrench or a spanner. Also, the side edges have the bumby surface for the use of other oil filter tools.
This filter is larger than the white Volvo filter but I am not sure whether or not it really matters a lot... Just change the oil at the recommended intervals and everything should be fine, especially when you use fully synthetic oil from a good quality brand. I use Mobil 1, the 5w40 turbodiesel truck fully synthetic oil, and I change oil every 5000miles or 6000 latest.

Mahle filter, made in Austria.
OC 105

Almost the same in size as the Mann filter above. Has the 'nut' on top and the edge was made to be used with the oil filter removal tools similarly as the MANN filter. Also mentions part number 1328162 on that little red sticker.
I have used this filter several times before and 'never had any issues'. Stuff made in Germany/Austria, must be of the good/better products.

Volvo filter (white), made in Germany.
Part number 1257492-7

This white color filter is smaller in size than the two filters mentioned above. I have used this multiple times without any (fitment or other) issues. It does not have the nut on the top but it comes with the bumpy edge all around, to be used with filter removal tools.
For some reason it is labeled
"Volvo cars DIESEL... Excl.Diesel turbo"

I have no idea why they labeled it that way... I have used this filter on my d24t engine without any issues. Probably about 15-20% smaller than the others? I am not sure how it might be different from the others (about the inside design or capacity). It would be a nice experiment to slice them all up to compare.
They are just too 'rare' for that.

I like these white oil filters because I can easily mark or label them with the date of the oil change and the odometer mileage. This provides an immediate, clear feedback about when the oil change was done. My inj pump leaks so instead of labeling it with a Sharpie pen, I rather scribe the filter with something sharp then use a marker or paint to write the info into the scratch.

I also like this filter because it works well with the blue color VOLVO original factory oil filter removal tool. I do not overtighten my filters but I almost want to because using that Volvo retro tool feels better than having it stored in a box for another 35years!

Volvo filter 1328162
This filter is made by Bosch and it was mostly used on the later turbodiesel models such as 740,760,940 etc especially in the mid 1990`s.
Black color, same size as the MANN black oil filter.
(?) The non-turbo d24 cars did not have an oil cooler in the filter bracket/filter housing... so maybe that has something to do with why these `turbo` filters are a little larger than the Volvo diesel white ones--- I am not sure though.

Also made by Volvo as 1328162, a 'tall' white version of the other white Volvo filter (very last picture, in post #6)

THE OTHER WHITE FILTER in the pictures (very left) IS THE SOMEWHAT RARE VOLVO DIESEL FUEL FILTER,
PART NUMBER 3547862. Made in France.
Works fine, I like using it, had used it several times, never an issue with it. The drain works properly and the o-rings never leaked on me.
I often use the Bosch diesel fuel filter too, and other brands.

I like to install this white diesel fuel filter at times when my oil filter happens to be the white OIL filter... made by/for Volvo.
