hello thank you both for your valued advice,
im thinking now doing what you suggest just changing oil in stages as i have always done .
i cleaned the old oil filter placed it in a tray of cellulose thinners and a thin paint brush got the tiny fileings out of the filter .
the growl is more when engine cold in low gear so problem oil needs warming up
then it sounds better .
