The banjo washers, if they are copper, can become what we call "work hardened" and difficult to create a good seal. If they are copper and you cannot find replacements (generally they are widely available), you can anneal them to regain their elasticity by heating them to cherry red with a torch.

If they are aluminum, they may have gotten deformed beyond reuse and better to replace them with new, no way to anneal them.
