Yes, the D24 NA pulls air as you describe.
My wagon has overheated several times in the past, but hasn't done so since I lowered my thermostat to 80c, added a radiator with more fins/tubes, replaced my hoses, flushed the cooling system, checked injectors, compression, etc..., but it has spiked once recently when accelerating onto the highway (about 210F for about a minute) and it tends to fluctuate a little more (180-195F) than my sedan, which seems pretty steady at 180-185F.
The car is difficult to cold start, producing a lot of smoke on start-up and seems to be running a little rich at the moment with about a 50-100F EGT difference between the two exhaust manifolds, which I am attributing to the injection pump, which is leaking diesel fuel on the engine-side (hope to have rebuilt soon)
