+1. Or even just a drain and refill, or maybe a couple cycles of them over a period of time. That might be the lowest risk of all. The cooler line flush method is easy but does take a little bit of careful attention and is best done with a helper. Can be done alone also, but it's a lot of things to manage all at one time.
As was noted, there is really no reason to drop the pan to change the "filter" as it is really just a mesh screen and won't be in need of replacement.
Is the growl in low gear definitely from the trans? Could it be the rear end? Are both the transmission and the axle full of fluid?
