So you did already drop the pan down and remove/clean that metal mesh filter?
If that is the case then you are probably better off just replacing the filter. Don't want to accidentally introduce any foreign chemicals like the cellulose thinner into the transmission. The material of the transmission clutch packs could be damaged by exposure to anything other than the correct type of ATF.
Replace the rubber gasket too of course if you remove the pan. And clean up the inside of the pan and the magnets.
But we thought you said you had not yet taken the pan off and were asking how it should be done??
