Thanks for that, too!

If anyone runs into the same cam seal issue in the future, here's the VW part number for the cam seal- 026 103 085 D - they were in stock at my local euro parts store.

The only other oddity I ran into was that the lower timing gear seems to be attached to the vibration damper/crank...

I'm in the middle of replacing the timing belts on my 85 740- finally got all the parts and tools together!

It's going fairly smoothly, but I have found that the camshaft seal I bought from NAPA...
