Default Compression and timing help

Two questions:

1) How do you time these engines or really what are the specs? I know people are talking about 90mm or so but what does that mean and what are the procedures for actually adjusting the timing?

I have a great diesel mechanic that works on lots of big stuff but is unfamiliar with the european specs. The timing and in millimeters as opposed to degrees is the real issue.

2) What should the compression be per cylinder on a D24T? What is good and what is marginal? I was told that 33 bar which translates to 478psi is new and 24 bar which translates to 348psi is marginal or rebuild time. Is this correct?

THanks Everybody!~!

Timing is done just like on an older VW diesel rabbit or Jetta. A local mechanic would be familiar with that. Google should give you a good guide for starters also.

Injection timing is the same as doing a first generation cummins powered dodge, or any other diesel using the VE pump.
Even if the you tested the compression and it was 300psi I would still run it. The variances in cylinders is what you really want to know. You don't want to see 400 psi on #1 and have 300 on #2 ect..
