I'm not sure, but Yakima's fitment guide specifies 58" CrossBars for the 7xx series. I've heard it's possible to use EMT conduit with the Yakima towers if your crossbars won't work- spray painted flat black they'd probably look just as good also.

Rain gutter or not?
I found a deal on a roof rack setup (crossbars, bike mounts, top carrier bin and a roof basket) but looking at the pics I`m not exactly 100% sure if these will attach to the 745 which car has ONLY the rain gutter (NO factory bars or other attachment points whatsoever)
I know this is not d24 specific but please take a look at the 2 pictures I got from seller... help me decide if (t)his stuff will mount onto my rain gutter or not. The crossbars are 52 long btw, that sounds OK to me. I`d like to buy it only if this IS a rain gutter style rack. It is lockable too+keys (nice). And it is made by VOLVO. (I have no chance to see it in person or try on the car) Thanks everyone! |

The first photo (profile view) sure looks like a gutter mount but would need a better photo to be sure. Have them open up the clamp and take another profile view on a simple background. Rain gutters on mine measure ~51-3/4" width so should be ok there.

Rain gutter
Quote:
Someone who has/had/seen a `Volvo-made` gutter mount rack before, say something. Looking at the picture I can`t tell how it attaches to the gutter...the black part I don`t get. (?) I flipped the pict for better results. Back plate with black (curved) plate goes in gap(?) then outer part goes/hooks under? This thing does look like a gutter mount to me but still not sure. What are those 2holes for? Crossbars---attachment point= 90degrees angle; it suggests a rain gutter setup, Im hoping. Last edited by RedArrow; 02-17-2014 at 05:08 PM. |

To me it looks like gutter clamps. Some time ago I had old school (rain gutter mounted) ski racks and the clamps looked similar to the ones in that photo as far as I could perceive from the busy photo. Don't know what more I can tell you. Two holes? What two holes?
If they won't send you better photos, and if you're not sure it's not going to work, let it pass. How about starting a thread on Turbobricks maintenance & nonperformance forum http://forums.turbobricks.com/forumdisplay.php?f=12 Much larger audience with higher probability they have or have seen Volvo racks. Oh look, here are photos of gutter mount racks on a 745 http://forums.turbobricks.com/showth...highlight=rack D24T.com is a wonderful forum, but I admit we are evidently not experts on gutter mount racks.

I would second that it looks like a gutter mount to me but I've never actually seen one so I don't really know. Turbo bricks or maybe volvoforums.org.uk might be a better idea for more general knowledge.

I think I had those same racks on my VW Caddy, and the rubber bit would try to escape. They clamped to the roof of my brick too, but I went to something lower profile. Width I'm not sure, but I have some 58" bars I can look at tomorrow.

v8volvo, ngoma,raw, TG and others
YOU GUYS HAVE EAGLE EYES! Of course you are all experts at roof racks too. Thanks for your helpful comments.
Square bars 52 inch long, lockable by Thule;Volvo labeled gutter mount type gear, rubber parts, locks, plugs, original 3 keys all there. It definitely WAS the right setup, all original, just as v8 described it. Picked up in Virginia, it ended up on my brick, at first came with a Volvo OE (Thule) luggage carrier type of basket (smaller, later sold for $100) I added a big flat cargo bag that has wheels & an all-around zip+locks+a cheat idp sticker at front.... then later I hunted down a bigger basket made by Kurt, it came with an extension making it even longer, over 62inches max.. First I polished those aluminium crossbar parts, I painted Volvo logo red, etc... but later decided to dip them in black to match overall trim of the car. The basket is very useful, have been using it on fishing trips, camping, shlepping furniture, even slept on top and it was comfy. Very stable, strong, can load over 200lbs on top, np. I usualy step on it to strap my junky gear down. I found the right Thule plugs for the bars, cleaned, painted and/or dipped all parts, fitted setup with stronger hardware and really enjoying them ever since, they look great (offroad style) and they are all lockable. Basket also locked to crossbars. Jeepers offered me to buy it off the brick. I`m wondering how to sneak some money out to buy a LED spot/fog bar onto basket, above or behind fairing. to make them go crazy. It doesn`t whistle much at 65, thanks to the Kurt fairing which will have a red prancing moose sticker available from www.davebarton.com. Last edited by RedArrow; 09-07-2014 at 04:37 PM. |
