To the diesel maniacs, hello!

I have owned 3 volvo diesels, a 1980, an 86 turbo diesel and now an 1982 gl with only 54000 original miles, car is in amazing condition with an engine that was not properly cared for. Oil consumption is a quart a tank! Smokes blue gray on acceleration, lacking power. I've done all the initial mechanical needs, had pump rebuilt, injectors rebuilt. I believe valves haven't been adjusted and valve seals are smoke problem. I am preparing a new head for replacement, good start? I don't want to change this car to much , just tweak about ten horse. will opening exhuast up help any? Love the car and ride, still smells like chanel #5. Kinda like driving grama's car!
