Went and picked up the '85 today, I was in the area on Thursday so I checked out a few things while I was there. Left rear tire wouldn't hold air so I brought the spare from the '89 745 with me and I grabbed the battery out of the '83 765 in case there was any shot in hell of getting it to run. Unfortunately the starter seemed to be locked up, most likely was under water in Hurricane Sandy.

This is where it has sat since 2007.

roof buckled from the last time it was rear ended. It has actually been hit in the drivers side rear 3 times in its life, the last one was sometime in '98 or '99 and really did a number on it.

Pulled it out about 15 feet to fill the right front tire and discovered that the wheel was locked up.

removed the wheel and caliper and everything spinning again in about 25 mins.

Finally loaded up after taking way longer than expected, but at least it was on there. The right rear would hold air, but only long enough to get it onto the trailer. Pretty sure the beads are all just corroded at this point, Ill probably try and clean them up this week and hopefully just have them as a spare set of rollers.

The rust ended up being a lot worse than I remembered it, I knew it was bad either way, but all the doors have some degree of rot, as do the wheel wells and I surprised to see the holes under the quarter windows.

This is what happens to vehicles that spend 31 years in the salt air at the Jersey shore. Its been around for every storm to hit the area since Hurricane Gloria.

I still get a kick out of this, the body shop that repaired it in 1986 installed the 740 GLE emblems backwards. They said they would replace them but my mom didn't care so that's the was they stayed for basically it's entire life.

Wow, so sad it sat that much.
Local weather has to do with those deep holes, for sure.
Car still looks way better than ugly expensive modern plastic junks with loads of sensors.
Fix it, enjoy it, show it.
Thanks for saving it, that is going to be a beautiful challenge. Keep posting!

Yeah, unfortunately after the last accident, for a "normal car" it wasn't logical to sink any more money into it at the time. My mom got a new car in 2001 to replace the 745, then my dad continued to drive it for 6 more years, then it was having a lot of trouble starting in the winter so it got parked and that was that.

The car that replaced the 745 was a 2001 Infiniti I30 and I actually just sold that car last month and believe it or not, the Volvo despite the toll its taken on the sheetmetal, structurally the car is in better shape than that damn Infiniti was.

Now that I have introduced all the cars and myself, I will hopefully get to start up a project thread in the near future when the real fun begins.

Nice, looks like some fun work ahead. That is some serious rust.

Planning to put the good parts in the '85 and get it on the road, or use the gas wagon's shell?

Looking forward to seeing where it goes. Sounds like the ball is rolling.

Yeah, the rust is even worse than what I thought it would be. I knew I would need the '89 turbo wagon either for parts or as a replacement body all together, it looks like thats the direction Ill be going, especially after getting the '85 on the lift and checking out the underside.

Glamour shot

Either way, it will be a mixing and matching of all the cars to make one solid car. Ill probably end up using the shell from the '89, but the interior in the '85 is much better.

The '85 is the only one with an alloy hood so that will get swapped over. I was contemplating using the '85 liftgate as well since its the only year not to have the center brake light, but I think safety is going to overrule style in this case, but I will definitely be putting the '85 gate into storage.

I've been a little busy lately so this project hasn't gotten off the ground yet, but in the meantime I have been gathering parts. I have all new lenses for the front and rear, picked up a new grill, crossbar and emblem, I also found a beautiful set of headlight bezels.... been keeping USPS, UPS and FedEx busy the last couple of months.

I also got the '85 up and running a couple weeks ago too, once I installed a new starter, it fired up on first crank even after sitting for 9 years.

I am hoping by next month I'll find the time to dig into this project and possibly have something rolling around Christmas. The only other thing I've been contemplating is using a Borg Warner T56 trans over the M46, if I can find (or if I already have) a 4.10 rear diff, the T56 would really work well. I know the T5 has been swapped in, so I'm curious what additional work it would take to make a T56 happen

Photobucket changed its policies a year or two ago and that resulted in the loss of many photos like these all over the web that had previously been hosted by them for free. There is lots of info on this out there. The only way the photos could come back in their original state would be if the original poster who owns the photos allowed themselves to be extorted and paid Photobucket's price to get everything back. Thus there's no way for us, not being the owners, to restore these so that they are visible in a thread like this to my knowledge, although someone said there might be ways to still view the individual pictures with some kind of workaround and effort.

It's a lot of work to go back and re-host and re-link all the photos for a thread like this so I wouldn't get hopes up that it will ever happen. Sometimes it seems like people put the work in to do it if it's a critical tutorial thread that is widely used and relied upon, but for just a for-fun project narrative like this one it is probably not likely, unfortunately.

Blame Photobucket and their greedy money grab. It makes sense that their service wouldn't be free, and would have been fair for them to charge a fee from the start, but switching up the deal after a lot of folks (and forums like this one) were already relying on it on the basis of it being free was an ugly move.
