Default Why my engine wouldn't start...

I've never seen a flywheel lose so many teeth before!

The engine is from a very tired car which I'm breaking for spares - 186,000 miles on the clock.

Has anyone seen this, or have any understanding of the root cause? I'm hoping that with a new flywheel the engine could live again - and am I safe to use the starter motor that came with this engine?

Cheers,
Jim.
