Do I see a marble in the 2nd photo? Did you try using it to reform the heat shield? Did it work?
I'm just re-forming the original shim, not making my own. I originally tried using the marbles but they just cracked. I now use the steel ball which works very well. The one I have is a bit to large but it does work.

And as "Anders" mentioned you have to look at them to make sure they aren't cracked. It's an interesting metal compound, it's brittle but still bends.

You may be correct! I'm using these based on some research and actual use by "v8volvo", a member here. There's a link to his thread earlier in this thread. Take a look at it. He appears to know what he's doing.

I did a 300 mile drive yesterday, adjusting the pump and LDA to various settings as I climbed and descended hills and valleys. The nozzles worked well, but I have nothing to compare my test to since this is my first D24T. On my return trip I was driving directly into 30-40 mph winds while driving 75-80mph so my mileage for the entire trip was only 27mpg. I'm mainly interested in good power with good miles per gallon.

The shims having holes in their centers I was talking about are what you referred to as spacers-- that you made from the tape measure.

O.K., I understand now.

I never thought about making a hole in the spacer. I don't think any fuel runs through that hole but I'm not 100% certain. Any input?

I believe the hole in the center of the shims is to let the excess fuel go to the return lines on the upper injector body.

Default Answer to hole in center of injector shim

Here's a link to one of my favorite diesel geniuses, Quantum-man, at the WVDieselParts.com site and his answer to how the diesel fuel returns to the barbs at the top half of the injector:

http://www.vwdieselparts.com/forum/v...uzzle&start=15

I had read this several years ago and just remembered he didn't make a hole in the shim. His explanation is quite good and I never questioned it by making the test myself. The guy know's his IDI diesels!

And of course, I have to give him credit for the idea of using measuring tape spacers.

Hmm.. I hope I'm not spreading a myth. I know there is two different injector bodies, maybe one of the styles needed the hole in the washer. I will look in to it and let you know what I find out..
