88 740 d24t
Hi guys
I got a deal on a 88 740 d24t really cheap...i was wondering about partes interchangeability between this and my 89 760 d24tic. |

As far as the engine goes, nearly everything should be the same. We didn't get D24TIC engines here so I'm not sure exactly what the differences are but I'd expect them to all be external... exhaust and intake manifolds possibly different, turbocharger set up for higher boost and compressor housing clocked differently, I believe they use a stouter fan clutch and a different oil cooler, and of course the intercooler, etc. But the basic stuff should all be the same, especially in terms of major engine parts and internals. Other major drivetrain mechanical bits - transmission, front half of the driveshaft, etc, probably the same as well.
As far as the rest of the car though, in that time period 740 and 760 are actually surprisingly different... 1988+ 760 has completely different (independent) rear suspension, different front clip/hood/cowl/windshield/wiper layout, different dash, completely different electrical system, different HVAC system, etc, etc, etc. Some stuff, like taillights, seats, interior bits, door pieces, etc may be compatible. But there's less compatibility than you'd think, given that the two cars are basically similar and share a platform.

I know that the oil dipstick in the d24tic goes through the block and in the d24t is in the oil pan...some one posted something about the heads being diferent...

The D24T is through the block skirt too, at least in a Volvo (Pinzgauers and LTs are different, they're through the pan). A D24 in a 200 series is through the pan. I imagine a D24 in a 700 series is probably through the block, like the D24T, but we never got NA 740 diesels here so dunno. :P
I'd strongly suspect that equivalent-year D24T and D24TIC blocks are the same. Getting into the later years (late '80s and 1990s), there might have been some differences -- later motors got hydraulic tappets, and some very late D24TIC motors with EGR had a completely different timing belt arrangement with a fixed water pump and separate tensioner roller. If you want to confirm what yours are, check the block code stamped just below the headgasket, on the driver's side under the vacuum pump. If your two motors share the same code, safe to conclude no differences in blocks. Our mechanical-lifter D24Ts here, IIRC, are coded DM (or DV? can't remember...). Both of your motors probably are something else though, since I think they're likely new enough to have hydraulic lifters. Here's where you'll find the block code (this one's a different code out of an early Pinzgauer TD...)
