Default EGTs

How high is too high? Hitting about 1200 on long hard accel. Cruising at 65-70 they are around 600.

1200 is fine, but it's winter. You might see higher temps then that pulling a long grade in the summer. I wouldn't want to see anything higher then 1,400 for a very short period of time. Adding an intercooler should lower your EGTs.

In my head, I just keep thinking "aluminum melts at 1221 F" as I'm driving. I don't have an EGT gauge yet, but I am running a stock engine right now. Once I finish the non-stock it will have an EGT gauge.

On an engine I didn't care much about (not a D24 - an Isuzu 1.8L) would run about where you say yours is, and never melted.

Interesting. I'm not sure how fast that melting process occurs. I've run over 1200 momentarily and the car still runs, but good to know.

I'm sure there are lots of factors.... There is cooling of the parts involved, but who knows about hot spots and things like that. I imagine if it gets too hot, you'll find out quick. What's the typical damage? Hole in the piston?

hopefully it will help lower my EGTs once I get my GTD nozzles back from the diesel shop.

Has anyone kept track of their EGTs before and after intercooling? How much of a difference can one expect? One of these days I will make it down to the pick and pull (closest one with a decent number of volvos is 2.5 hours away) and hopefully pull an intercooler and e-fan from a 900. I would like to be able to drive it hard when I want to without worrying too much about damaging the engine. I hardly make any smoke at full throttle but if I keep it pinned it will hit 1300 and keep rising.
