Got it. I loosened the three bolts but didn't get any movement. Guess I'll figure it out when I get to that step. Now I'm fabricating a counterhold (5187) for the dampener. Does anyone know the length of the extension arm of the wrench for the center bolt (5188)?

Correction: Two of the waterpump mounting holes are slotted.

As long as you have all three bolts out, you should really remove the waterpump and replace the sealing o-ring especially if it's not recently fresh. I've had leaks from there before. PIA to get everything buttoned back up and the timing set, only to find it's leaking from that o-ring.

I now have the heat shields, injectors, new timing belt and harmonic balancer installed. The engine block is cleaned up including head bolt holes and mating surface. Now getting ready to install intake and exhaust manifolds and torque center bolt for balancer. I fabricated a counter hold, now need to make the wrench 5188.

Questions: Can't seem to find a source for the water pump O-ring. would it be ok to use RTV sealant or similar with old O-ring?

I have intake gaskets, but do I also need exhaust gaskets?

Does anyone know the dimensions for harmonic balancer wrench 5188? I'm most concerned with the length between the socket and hole for the torque wrench.

Water pump o-ring part number is 035121043. Available online for under $2 or the dimensions are 98mm x 4mm if you want to find one off the shelf.

I suggest using a new O-ring and don't consider RTV here. You will need to move the pump multiple times as you adjust the pump's position when setting timing belt tension, disturbing the sealant. It's also a hassle to clean up the next time you are there.

Thanks for the o-ring part number v8volvo. I will order that and I found exhaust gaskets. Now what I really need is dimensions for harmonic balancer wrench 5188 so that I can fab one and get proper torque on balancer bolt.

It's 3/4" drive. 10mm flat stock offset 13.5 mm. Twelve inches between fixing points.

Thank you, Goteborg Vapenfabrik!! I'll fab that up next week and torque that bolt properly. Only thing is I may make it for 1/2 inch drive unless I go to Harbor Freight to pick up a 3/4 one. Also, the book calls for sealant on the threads of the bolt. Would Loctite red be sufficient?

1/2 inch torque wrench should be OK as long as it can achieve the necessary 255 ft-lbs. This works out to actual ~340 ft-lbs at the bolt itself, after the torque multiplication of the 5188 special tool.

Remember that torque wrenches are most accurate in the middle of their ranges.

There are differing opinions on whether locking compound is a help or hindrance on this crucial torque specification. I used an adapter and a 1/2" torque wrench set at the maximum value of 250 ft-lbs. I turned the screw about 30 more degrees with a shop made tool after the book value was reached. I applied synthetic engine oil to the harmonic balancer screw threads and the friction area on the head of the screw before installing it in the crankshaft. A 3/4" drive torque wrench wouldn't hurt since the value in the book is the absolute minimum torque value for this procedure.
