Question Filling new fuel filter with ATF?

I'm planning on replacing my fuel filter and some of the old timers in my neck of the woods claim that filling the new filter with ATF is a quick and easy way to clean the injectors. Is there any truth to this?

Thanks,

Maybe so, maybe no, but is certainly a quick and easy way to prime your filter with known clean fuel.

I have only ever attributed my injector problems to wear and debris, neither of which will be affected much by ATF.
My ATF costs the same as the injection additives anyway.

Default Purge

A shame that some shops still find it easier reusing old fuel in NEW filter ... PLEASE, NEVER!
I did the ATF `trick` to my other diesels with no bad results but I`d use *this* instead.

Lubro Moly Diesel Purge, that sounds like the right stuff to me, too. I'll try and track this down and report back how it went.

Thanks!

I like to just install the filter dry, and then hook a mityvac to the return line and pump until it's primed. I agree with 745, that injector problems are usually due to wear or large dirt particles that won't make it past a good filter system- I don't think there's anything there to be cleaned out with injector cleaner.

I remember the older Mercedes diesels have a manual `pump` to move fuel

I agree - With a new fuel filter, a 450mile 70-75mph drive will clean up nicely in 6hrs, I`m sure.
Especially on BIOdiesel (B100) but then you must carry an extra filter or two..
