Question Exhaust leak between manifold and turbocharger

Dieselers,

Over the last week or so I noted an unfamiliar noise coming from under the hood. I tracked it down to a leak between the exhaust manifold and turbo, traces of soot helped in reaching this conclusion. I recall when mounting the turbo on the workbench that I had difficulty in reaching a few of the nuts which secure the turbo. I feel pretty confident that I was not able to torque one of two down sufficiently; I have two questions:
  1. Is there a special tool (crows foot, adapter, etc) ideal for this task?
  2. Should there be a gasket between the manifold and turbo?

Thanks for any suggestions on the topic, Jim
