D24TIC Big End Nuts.
G'Day Guys,
It's been a while since I last posted as I've been working on the body and chassis of my 718 Pinzgauer, but I've finally got around to doing the motor.......I've posted a few pics below I've had the block "tanked" to remove the rust in the water galleries (the Malaysian Military didn't use coolant, just plain water) but the rest of the motor seems to be in pretty good nick, however I'm still fully rebuilding it. One thing that does confuse me is that the Factory Manuals (both Volvo and Pinzgauer) say that the conrod big end nuts cannot be reused and must be replaced with new items........but what about the bolts?....Can they be reused? I thought finding new nuts would be easy..... WRONG....(well not in this country and a lot of overseas suppliers won't even return my emails) Can anybody suggest a good supplier for the nuts? THANKS! Some rod bolts are TTY, one time use. They have a conical shape bolt head with no markings. I would not try my luck reusing those.
The spherical shaped bolt heads with markings on them can be reused. ARP sells rod bolts for the 1.6, get a set and a half of those, install them and then go get the rods re-sized.

Thanks for the info Anders.
Please excuse my ignorance, but as there are only two 718 Pinzgauers in Australia, and the D24T/IC motor was never imported into Australia, in any vehicle, local knowledge and parts are virtually non existant. Initially I stupidly thought the nuts (and bolts) would be common to some other VW's imported here but that theory very quickly disappeared out the window. I checked the ARP site and they don't list a 1.6 motor, but do have bolts and nuts for a RABBIT but unfortunately they don't list the bolt specs (length, dia etc) so I can't cross reference, hence I thought it best to double-check with you, that they are the correct bolts before I lash out on two sets at $138US each ..... 8-( http://arp-bolts.com/kits/ARPkit-detail.php?RecordID=97 Regards Last edited by Profpinz; 11-14-2014 at 06:53 PM. |
