Default Engine Bay Wire Harness for 85 740, N/A Intake Manifold

Hi all.

I've already checked Uncle Dave Barton's website and couldn't find a harness there for a D24T equipped 85 740, which kinda surprises me. Did I miss it?

Does anybody else out there have a good one? Mine is TOTALLY ROTTEN!

Also, there was a fellow a few years ago on TurboBricks who was literally giving away D24 N/A intakes but I cant find his info now. Anybody know who I'm talking about? Does anybody else out there have a very inexpensive N/A intake? Dimpled or not?

Any help is appreciated!

Regards,
Eric

Default Also need a harness

Hello Eric - ThickasaBrick

I to sent an email to Dave Barton looking for a harness for my 84' 760 D24T his reply to me...

"Hi Bobby,
I have no sources for diesels harnesses.
Dave"

If you find a source let me PLEASE let me know.

I did a search and came up with this, QUITE PRICEY THOUGH, and I haven't contacted them yet to see if they are still available and if they are updated - made with quality wire.

http://www.volvopartswarehouse.com/a.../GR-30931.html

Go to the site and search for what you're looking for, hope this helps.

Thanks Ironman.

I can't do "PRICEY". Let's hope a third option presents itself for both of us.

I'm pretty much dead in the water right now as hardly anything is working anymore. Wipers, windows, defroster, radio, etc., only work intermittently. (I don't understand why the windows are effected though.) I actually stopped driving the car 9 years ago because of this stuff, but now would really like to bring the car back to life. The last time I drove it at all was about a year ago.

I forget the model year range for the biodegradable Bosch wiring used in these cars, but 1985 is solidly in that range. My experience has been that the wire insulation deteriorates mostly in areas that see heat, oil, and flexing, esp. where it runs along the engine block (both temp sensors, oil pressure sensor, the bundle that runs tight beneath the oilpan and around the oil filter, etc.).

Probably no good used replacements because of the limited MY range and low production numbers of these cars with the diesel option, and most of those are the Bosch junk wire that has similarly suffered.

Best low-mediuim budget solution is to closely inspect the wiring in these areas and replace with good quality wire/connectors as required, or at the minimum paint the exposed conductors with liquid insulation brush-on type product. Might need to slice open the hard black plastic sleeving to verify the wire condition. Happily, the diesel models have far less complex wiring harness than the gassers.

Most of the other chassis and interior wiring I have seen seems to be less problematical, because of milder environmental conditions. Less intense heat, vibration, chemical attack. Electric window switches are almost always inop/dirty, and relay connectors (behind the ashtray) are also well-known suspects, much more than the interior wiring.

Thanks for the help. And thanks for reminding me that I need to check the relay and fuse box behind the ash tray. I have a 90 745 turbo gas car that had all kinds of problems in that area. Of course being a 90, it DOESN'T have the bad engine bay wiring problem though.

I had already planned on using the liquid insulation product (I have used it in the past on many projects) but this car, which is pushing 30 years of age, has some wiring that is totally bare it's entire length! I really need to score a used harness that was a replacement harness from somebody's rust bucket that they are having to part out. I actually saw such a car here in the classifieds but the seller instead decided to keep the car's parts for himself when he found another car. There simply can't be that many of these left that still have their original harnesses!

You want to hear something really funny? About the time that Volvo straightened this mess out, Mercedes must have started buying harnesses from the same junk OEM supplier because 92-95 M119 and M104 powered W124s (E-class) had the same exact engine bay wire rotting problem! I have a 93 400E that I had to replace the entire harness on and the rotted insulation bits falling off of the old harness look EXACTLY the same as the rotten insulation bits falling off of my 85 Brick's harness do! A replacement harness scored from the junkyard fixed my 400E, I've got to come up with a similar solution for my diesel. But it doesn't look good though. This whole entire 9 years I've been on the lookout for a diesel 7 series in my junkyard travels, and I never saw even one!

The accessory wiring isn't any different from a gas car.

You need starter, ig power to the fuel pump, and 2 wires to the alternator.

You have my attention!

What year range gas car accessory harnesses can I use?

Yeah, the old style dual sealed beam headlight set-up. That makes sense! Thanks!

Still, in the meantime, since I'm not going to be able to do any junkyarding for about another month, I'm open to entertaining the option of obtaining a complete engine bay harness from a board member. Anybody have one, or know where I could get one?
