ngoma- I followed your advice by replacing the O-ring for the water pump, even though it took a few steps backward- glad I did because the old one was unserviceable to say the least.
I bought a 3/4 torque wrench and got the required torque for the center bolt using my homemade wrench and counter hold. Got a very satisfying "CLICK." The most difficult part was making a 3/4 inch square hole. Thanks for the specs, Goteborg Vapenfabrik Now the cylinder head and the front sprocket are installed and torqued. The timing belt seems tight but I don't have the gauge to test it. One concern is during the final stage of torqueing the head bolts instead of 180 degrees, I wound up with 165-ish on all because of an obstruction with turning the wrench the full amount on the first bolt. The book says to turn without stopping. Should I torque all the bolts another 15 degrees or just leave it or should I throw away those bolts and start with new ones? I will try to add photos. |

Fiber head gasket or MLS? Fiber seems to be more forgiving.

Head gasket is Victor Reinz 61-28990-10. Not sure what the material is.
The problem I have now is the Injector pump sprocket won't turn except for a little play a quarter inch or so. I don't want to force, so I'm thinking of removing the top as I think Anders once suggested. |

Guessing by your description of the final 180deg. torquing instruction, that points to a MLS head gasket. Are those the instructions that came with the gasket?
MLS head gasket surface looks like shiny steel sheet. Fiber head gasket surface looks and feels more like gray cardboard. My thinking was, since the fiber head gasket is believed to be more forgiving of surface imperfections, and even overall surface roughness, that you may be OK with your 165deg twist instead of the specified 180deg. But then again, the fiber gasket will need the additional 90deg bolt twist after the first warmup, and again another after the first ~1000 miles. The original style TTY torque to yield head bolts are not the best for achieving and maintaining head to block clamping force. They are used because of assembly line ease of assembly and time/cost efficiencies, etc. What was the obstruction for bolt #1? I could see possible obstructions for the rearmost bolts, with the hood hinges but #1 is in the middle of the head. Regarding the locked-up IP, had you done any work on it since the last time it was running?

I have seen one or two of those lower timing belt shrouds that were sliced by the idler roller like yours. I think it happens when the shroud gets installed and then the fan bearing/alternator bracket gets installed on top of it without getting the tab on the bottom of the bracket in the correct position. It is not obvious for someone seeing it for the first time that the tab on that bracket needs to fit on the inside of the sheetmetal belt shroud, not outside of it. If it is on the outside it pushes the shroud in to where it touches the roller. Easier to put the alternator bracket on first and then the shroud after.
Nice work on the tools and sounds like they did the job well. It was probably the lack of those tools when the last guy worked on it that caused the damage to the engine in the first place.

ngoma-- I took the torqueing sequences and values from the Green Book. The obstruction was me and my clumsiness. I got the car after it died back in 2005-ish with the engine in partial disassembly and never did any work on the IP. I have now unlocked the IP by (regrettingly) opening the governor cover and lubricating the innards with PB Blaster. It finally started turning, but it wasn't a fluid rotation (not sure how it's supposed to turn). I now have the IP belt on and am trying to time the engine with the dial indicator. I'm planning to attach the remining components and introduce fuel through a jerrycan and new fuel filter.
v8volvo-- I can see how it would be easy to attach the lower timing belt shroud improperly. One of the more challenging parts of this project is discovering and addressing the minor deficiencies left by those who worked on the engine before. In all fairness, I include myself in the previous statement as the car has been sitting in my garage for 13-plus years.
