Unhappy coolant hose failed, and my engine did die. :(

Okay need some help. 83 740, lower rad hose hit the crank, chewed through it while I was going down the freeway. Didn't let out any steam. Temp gauge never moved. Have been having problems with temp guage prior. Wish I could have fixed it, may have saved car. Anyway. So it starts getting down on power while I'm driving, then the temp gauge snaps to cold. Really fast. As soon as It did I pushed in the clutch, and the engine died. I tried bump starting It while I was still rolling. Tried it twice, first time it wouldn't turn over, second time it turned over but sounded like it had no compression. Ugh. So I freak out a little lol. Tow it home. Get there and here's all I've found so far, I don't have a garage or a place to work on it for now so this is just basic stuff. Checked timing belt, it appears okay. Now the pump belt confuses me. Its loose. Very loose. Like crazy loose. The pump has not moved from what I can tell. The cam is okay. At least both ends still seem connected lol. I'm about to pull the valve cover off. Let me know what you guys think is wrong. I will get it fixed just need to know what's wrong so I can start ordering parts. It sucks that it happened but I will fix it come hell or high water lol.

Sounds like you cooked the engine. You may just have a cracked/warped cylinder head, or you could also have stuck piston rings due to melted/distorted piston ring lands due to the overheating. I am afraid that you will need to disassemble the engine. Where are you located?

I'm in central Ohio. I have been messing with it a lot lately, think it may be something simple. It turned over wen we Got it home and i actually Got it to try to start off a very small amount of eather. The pump belt is stretched so much that its totally not touching the pump pulley . being that it tried to start I'm replacing pump belt now and seeing what it does. Need to rewire the temp sensor, its trying to cycle glow plugs really long since it failed. And need a lower rad hose to replace the broken one. May have to get a universal kit every place I've contacted can't get one. I'll keep updating on hot it goes.may have more questions about getting parts if there is internal damage.

Assuming the rest of the hose is in good condition, can you splice it with a small section of appropriately-sized copper pipe? Cut out the damaged section, slip the copper pipe into both sides, hose clamps.

Then tie-wrap the hose to the radiator support crosspiece to keep it off the crank pulley. There should be a half-round clamp there to position the hose away from the pulley but those are often missing.

That is what I had done and it blew apart. It's okay. Pulling motor doing full rebuild/port/polish New turbos custom manifold and shoving into a 84 240 over next few months. I'll post pics. And I'm getting braided steel warped rad hoses so this won't happen again. Lol

There are many ways to have a turbo diesel 240, what route are you taking? The hardest part is the turbo drain..

I am taking the 740 motor and putting it into the 240. I bought the 740 as a parts car to do this, never ment to drive it, but my Honda died and I kept driving the 740 because it was more fun lol. But I am pulling the 740 motor today. Next week the d24 comes out of the 240 so I can start fabrication for the crossmember, and the rad support. Keeping everything I can from 740 to put in 240. I think my motor is still good, but but going to rebuild it and do everything I can to make it as reliable and powerful as I can. I'm a heavy diesel tech by trade, but have a lot of auto tech experience, gonna need it all for this project lol. Trying to make it a good looking daily driver. It's very unique and it's so fun to drive lol. Get a lot of people out here stop in ya to ask questions and admire it lol. I miss that a lot. I'm stuck in the civic again till this is done

I do have a question tho. Why does the 740 cool so much better than the 240? Is it the differnce in radiator? The fans? Or something internal? Because the 240 took every opportuniti to overheat and leave me stuck somewhere. The 740 I've driven from Wisconsin to pa with no problems even Sat in Chicago traffic for 3 hours didn't even get hot.

Sounds like you had a problem with your 240, something was not in good shape.
I have been running my turbo diesel 240 with the stock radiator and large inter cooler in front of it, injection pump has been maxed for the last 70,000 miles and I have never had a issue with it heating up.
I would not cut anything on your car to install the 740 radiator.

I would not modify the crossmember either, I would modify the 240 oil pan for the turbo drain, the 240's and 740's engines are slanted differently so the 740 pan will not be correct with the 240 engine mounts.
