Default 3.30 rear end+m46+d24t=good idea???

I was thinking of putting a 3.30 rear end in my d24t with a m46. I have 3.90 right now, Does anyone think this is a good idea?

Thats gonna be pretty tall. Stock for the m46 was 3.55. It would really cruise nice on the highway with low rpms, but taking off in 1st gear I think it would be kinda tall and a pain in the ass in traffic. You would be slipping the clutch alot. I would probably stick with 3.55s if your wanting to go taller.

I only have 3.90 right now and I found a 740, with a m47 hoping it would have 3.54: but it had 3.30. I bought the rear end cheap.

Interesting, I thought the M47 5th gear was the same ratio or very close to the overdrive unit on the M46, but maybe not? You should look up gear ratios. I still think it would be a little tall, but if its more than you want its not like your stuck with it forever...

I wouldn't even hesitate to install the 3.30! I think it would be great to lower my engine speed by 200 RPM on the highway! It seems that you would see an improvement in fuel economy.

If you don't install it, can I buy it from you?

I drive D24TIC M47 3.07 with big wheels (215/80/15") and it drives very well. (i call them "overdrive-wheels")
Jason is right, when i set of in first gear, i have to slip the clutch a little but it's no problem for me.
Even on holyday's when i tow the folding-caravan with full packing on the roof and inside, the torque of the D24TIC handles it all well.

There's one point to be carefull; watch your temp.gauge, the lower rpm causes the coolantflow to be not strong enough to cool the engine so sometimes i shift to 4th to create more flow and make it a little easyer for the engine.

That is exciting! What kind of fuel highway fuel economy do you get unloaded?

When driving 100 - 120KM/hour the D24TIC consumes 1 liter diesel / 14 Kilometer.
Remember Holland has a flat surface.

That is disappointing! I think that is about 33 miles/gallon. I was hoping you were getting above 40 mpg (1 liter/ 17 km).

Did you notice a change in fuel economy after the ratio change?

No, i didn't , simply because (as i mentioned before) i drive 5000KM each year so consumption is not a point.
Most times i don't calculate the consumption, sometimes on holyday (when driving 300 - 400KM) i calculate the consumption.
