Default D24T in P1800?

Has anyone ever done this? I have a '65 P1800 that's just begging for this engine, and I'd like to know if anyone has ever done this and has any details for me. Thanks!

Welcome aboard Oddmodman,

I haven't heard of anyone doing this, but we have a lot of members in Europe and you never know what they're up to. The 1800 is a cool car for sure, but I'm not sure how well the D24T would physically fit in that engine compartment. IIRC the 1800 has a 4-cylinder engine. Add a radiator and a fan to that, plus the heater box (or whatever that is in the center in the cowl), and the engine compartment is already a bit cramped.

I think the length of the D24T is going to be a concern for you. If you could make it work that would be seriously cool.

Cool

That was my concern as well. Length, but also depth. I know of a guy who fitted a Supra I6 in one, but it was too deep. So yeah, I don't know if it'll work, but I'm dying to find out. Oh, and yes they had 4 cyl petrol-burners, 1.8l and 2.0l. My engine only has 20k on a rebuild...but I like diesel. Especially modifiable diesel

There was an inline 5-cylinder version of the D24T, logically called the D20 and D20T. It's more or less the same as it's 6-cylinder cousin except for a missing cylinder, an obscure injection pump, and the vacuum pump was mounted at the rear of the engine and run off the rear camshaft belt gear.

In the US these engines were found (I believe) in Audi 5000 (non-turbo) and 5000 S (turbo), front wheel drive only. Could be a better-fitting alternative, though you'd have to dig one up.

Dieselmaffian's sweet 142 is the closest i've seen

The 1800 engine bay isn't very swap friendly , but if you cut enough metal anything is possible.

What about Direct Injection engines? There don't seem to me to be that many car-sized TDI engines out there. Did VW make any bigger than a 4 cyl?

Really I'm just hoping to find a direct injected 5 cyl. So there's the D20T and the MB 5 cyl, but they're both IDI, and I'd like TDI. Anybody know of any out there? From old to modern? Oh, it has to be car sized.

Vw has a 2.4 5 cylinder tdi. It was used in the lt vans overseas. It's what replaced the d24t. Not so common here in the states though.. Why not a 1.9 tdi with mechanical pump?

The TDI 5 from Dakar race Toureg and Bosch motorsport ECU is the ideal solution if you want 5 cylinders.
