Default new member from NJ checking in

Hi, finally joined the forum, not sure what took me so long, I've been around these engines since I was 6 years old, but I'm finally here.

I recently picked up an '83 760 GLE D24T (I believe they were all M46 that year?) mainly for parts. Seller couldn't really tell me when it ran last but it was well over a year, I wouldn't say it was neglected but it certainly hadn't been loved like it should.

I got it because it was cheap and should give me everything I need to swap out the ZF22 that's in the '85 745 GLE D24T that I will pick up soon. It's currently at my parents house as they are the original owners. Main reason I don't want to keep the auto is because the trans failed sometime in 1996, it was rebuilt by a local Lee Myles transmission shop and it was never right since. I believe it failed again and fixed under warranty, but it would never shift out of 1st unless you tached it out and then left off the gas, then it would be fine after that.

It hasn't seen daily driver status since 2001 and only did some "around town" driving for a couple years after that, since then it's been sitting in a coastal town in NJ so it too may only be a parts car, won't know until I get it on a lift and see if it falls apart or not.

I also own a TDI Jetta that I picked up in 2009, was originally an auto too, previous owner had that trans rebuilt and 18 months later it started to develop problems, unfortunately he had put so many miles on it in that time he was out of warranty and the shop wanted another $2500 to rebuild it again, so he picked up a 5-Speed Golf and I bought the Jetta. I drove it for a month until the problems were too severe to drive, meanwhile I gathered up all the parts I needed to complete the swap to manual and the rest is history. I hate to get rid of it, but if my 745 Project is a success, I will probably end up selling it.

I have a number of other cars, trucks and projects I'm into as well, but this introductory novel is long enough.

Glad to be a part of the forum, I've been doing a lot of reading and at some point will start a build thread for my project.

I didn't think there would would be another typhoon owner on here!
Mine is #27, I also have a Sonoma GT.

Swapping out the zf for the m46 is an easy task, I like to row gears myself, but the short first gear on the m46 is not desirable. The zf and the d24t make a wonderful combo. Your going about it the best way with buying a complete donor car.

What's the plan for the rest of the 83 760 after the transmission is removed?

Small world right? Black/Black 92 with roof rack? nice Seems no matter what forum I'm on, there is at least one person who has or has had a SyTySoGT at some point, and then of course there is always the "my dads friends neighbor had one back in the day, ran 9's at the track " haha.

I've had at least 1 Ty in the garage for the past 16 years, I had another 92 and another 93 besides the ones in my signature.

I'm glad you say its easy, I was somewhat worried about it, but my biggest task is probably going to be making sure that the body is good.

I've driven an '83 245 M46 D24 car before, I do recall 1st gear being very short, but eventually I'd like to swap the M46 out to a T56 or maybe a V160 or something similar. I figure I'll get this car running as it should first, but Ill take all the measurements I need to eventually do another swap.

I'm also not opposed to swapping out the rear to different ratio, even if its not a Volvo rear.

Haven't really thought that far ahead yet, not sure what I'll need off of it, I don't really have a use for the shell, if I can sell it to someone who could use it that would be great, I have a clean title for it, but if I can't sell it, I will be pulling all the trim and parts that may be useful for me in the future for me or I can sell and scrap whatever is left.

Got the 760 running today. Didn't happen as quickly and I was hoping, but its better than not being about to get it to run at all.

The whole system was completely air bound, was not surprised by that but was not sure why it was like that. The fuel filter that was on it was extremely old and extremely dirty both inside and out. I'd be very surprised if the previous owner even changed it during his ownership.

I installed a new filter, filled it with fresh fuel, them proceeded to prime the rest of the system through the return line. Cracked the injector lines and finally started to get fuel to the them. Finally got it running then went back and bled the injectors one by one.

It's still running rough, but at least its running. There is a pretty decent leak at the top of the IP (did not try tightening anything yet) which is probably the reason/cause for it to lose prime and stop running on its last owner.

When bleeding the injectors one by one, I'm not getting any noticeable change in how it runs when I crack open #1 and very little when I do #4. I would not be surprised if they are clogged or just need to be rebuilt completely. I also noticed after it was running for a while that I was getting fuel and air bubble appearing around the base of injector #2, so that will need to get inspected as well.

I took a short video of it running just for the hell of it.

Also decided to see what was working and not working on the car while I was letting it run, all the lights work except for the fogs in the front and there is a parking bulb out in the rear. The voltmeter bounces around A LOT when the turn signals are on, not sure if its a gauge issue or electrical issue somewhere in the system. I did notice the car was only charging around 13.2 volts which didn't seem too great to me, but for not its just something else to stick in the notebook and address when the project car starts getting built.

Forumers,... this was the car I have been watching for over a few years and recently it showed up again and owner was really hard to deal with. I think he is very very ignorant just as Morgan described it.
That fuel filter wasn't the only thing he did not give a damn about.
I saw his property today (serious hoarding), went there from nyc to dc, drove from 2am to 6am and he was lazy to wake up to show me the spare engine he still has for sale. Thrown into a collapsing bldg. with garden mowers, junk scrapmetal, rusty bikes, axles and old rims and junkyard heavyduty car parts on top. You cant even step in.All that after you cross a grown-in garden with no pavement.

About the engine offered: Critical front damage to crank, side, pulleys, etc. brackets broken off... tipical signs of big front collision, engine stuck, camshaft probably broken too, at the minimum. tb came off, cover fully bent, stuck, cant even remove it, etc carnage. Parts broken off all around, missing parts too and accessories bent, cracked etc.Like it rolled. LOL. Front collision, for sure.
He `forgot ` to describe it. BTW he could not say a word in English, screaming through his neighborhood like when a fishing eagle spots a salmon from the air.

I got very angry and called it a day. A bad one. He also did not tell me the truth about where when he got it but he said that he paid 600 for it at a junkyard and it is repairable. No it isn't. I saw it. Everybody is stupid except him, right?

That`s the story in a nutshell. MORGAN, about the car. I am interested to have the engine and use it or maybe even save the shell and have a tranny for it later. I haven't seen the car itself in person, besides a quick look back in 2013 and 2014. Later I lost his address and phone # so it never got sold. Parked for yrs on flat tires and tree branches on top, busted front lights, interior stuffed w misc junkyard items etc. Very nasty and disrespectful treatment for a quite rare car.

I too had an interesting experience when I was there. For someone who was selling a car, especially for the amount of time you mentioned, you'd think everything would be together, ready to go.

Not only was the seller not home at the time we specified to meet at, when he did finally arrive, I wasted another hour waiting for him to find and gather up additional parts he had, not to mention extra keys.

I never even bothered looking closely at the engine simply because I had no way of moving it. Had I known about it ahead of time, I could have been prepared, but it sounds like it would have been wasted effort anyway.

Welcome to the board. Sounds like you've got a good project lined up.

I have an '83 760 same as yours, when you get it and the '85 side by side, you'll be surprised at how different the cars are. The '83 and early '84 760s are oddballs, front suspension uses different parts, a number of differences in the interior, some electrical differences too. Should make a good powertrain donor, those parts are the same. The '83 also gives you non-EGR intake and exhaust manifolds and a non-EGR, non-altitude-compensated IP to stick on the '85 that has those things if you want to use them.

I can relate to the buying experience as well, I once bought an '85 TD wagon as a parts car from a guy who lived in what amounted to a riverside bog near Everett, WA. The car was so rough that once I pulled the good drivetrain from it, for use in a different project, there was nothing else worth keeping. The guy had plans to fix it up and drive it. He should have thanked me for saving him from that mistake but instead he wouldn't budge on his too-high asking price, which I paid without much argument just to get the hell out of there.

Sounds like a couple of bad injectors is a good guess but you may want to check valve clearances too on those weak cylinders, if it has been neglected those may not have been looked at in a long time. I've had injectors stick sometimes where they let compression burp back into the injector, which pumps the fuel system full of air and makes the engine run poorly and hard to restart. Could be another thing to look for if loss of prime is something you encountered. Usually with these if you crack the line nut with the engine running it will pour out foam, easy to find. Otherwise leaky seals in the IP could do it too.

Looking forward to hearing how it progresses, sounds like it will be fun.

Good to know about the differences, not so much concerned with the suspension, in fact I've been meaning to see what upgrades came along after '85 with the 700's and/or 900's that would be bolt ons (bigger brakes, sway bars, etc.)

Interior will stay all '85, I'm really not a fan of the way the automatic climate control setup looks, I prefer the manual controls in the 740 so all that still will stay. I never noticed the EGR stuff on the 85 but then again I've never looked for it either, im sure a side by side look will probably beneficial for me since I've been out of the Volvo game for so long.

Yup, I basically did the same thing with the last Typhoon I bought, I was looking at it as a parts truck anyway, did negotiate down a bit, but he took my offer almost immediately so then I was kicking myself the whole 12 hour drive home that I didn't hit him lower. Oh well, I got what I wanted and in the long run didn't lose money, but saving another $100-$200 would have been nice.

I was contemplating some fuel injector cleaner or some other additives just for the hell of it, it had 3/4 tank in it, but now I have to assume the fuel is 3-4 years old and the stuff that was in the old fuel filter resembled iced tea more than it did diesel fuel.

Picked up a parts wagon today, '89 745 Turbo / Auto. Body is in great shape, couple dings here and there but not bad at all for its age.
