Default Won't Start, Glow Plugs? Injector pump Timing? Volvo 760gle HELP!!!

Hi

Well she started yesterday. It was a really hot day and I was in LA picking up the car. The transmission was JUST replaced. No problems starting on the first try. I probably started and stopped the car 8 times that day. Perfect.

Today is overcast and in the 70's.
Perhaps that doesn't make a difference but it won't start.
It does turn over and has plenty of battery.

Any suggestions?
Also, it's been kind of smokey. Grayish black color, especially when I step on it.

Could it be glow plugs? How do I test them to determine if they are good or not? I was told it is a measurement of resistance in Ohms. Does anyone know what is good and what is bad?

Could it be the injector pump timing? The day that I bought it, the old owner adjusted it a little without taking measurements of any kind, just advanced or retarded it a little. It was a freezing cold, 28 degree day and it was having trouble starting. He made an adjustment to hopefully help with the starting but it ended up that the first glow plug was bad. He replaced it and vooom it started right up.

I'd appreciate your advice.

Exactly what has changed between the times it started and now not starting?

It is possible that one or more GPs failed during that time. Depends on the temp, but these engines do not like to start with more than 1 or 2 bad GPs.

Did you try cycling the GPs a few times before cranking?

Pretty sure there is some advice in one of these postings here on this forum that gives numbers for testing the GPs. I just tried doing a search and the search function is erroring out on me.

I tried cycling the Glow Plugs multiple times but no luck.

Anyone know about the injection pump timing?

Search function still not working for me, maybe you could try? Try searching on "dial indicator" or "timing."

There are no many reasons :

-check the glowplugs one by one or check with an amp meter how much they suck: it's betwen 10 and 12 amps per glowplug so 60minimum to 72 amps for 6 working glowplugs.



-check the timing on the pump.

-check the valve adjustment (if you have tappets and not hydraulic lifters) just to be sure.
one or two valves are maybe not well closed when the metal is retracted.


You have grey smoke ? the pump is not well ajusted.
