Did you measure piston protrusion above block to determine which head gasket to use?( and also make sure failed head gasket did not bend a rod). never count on the previous owner having used the correct gasket, I've seen VW have it wrong
The head surface3 should be quite a lot smoother when using an MLS gasket.

The MLS head gasket likes an extra smooth finish, 20RA(machinists roughness measurement), and should not require any extra sealant. Most even specify 'install dry'.
