Timing belt intact, that’s good. Next step would be removing all six glow plugs to then attempt to rotate the crankshaft pulley ,if one of the cylinders is hydro locked the coolant will be expelled.

Sorry if it’s like pulling teeth with this post. The car is 40 minutes away from me.

Mechanic said basically timing screwed up the head. One of the can followers is bent. Needs head resurfacing and needs to open it up further to see what potential damage exactly.
I found an engine on fb marketplace for 1k.. should I try fixing mine or swap out? |

Sorry for this bad news. You have a bent valve or multiple bent valves. Any engine for sale on fb is just as likely to be damaged or worn out. This type of damage does not require cylinder head resurfacing, the cylinder head may be salvageable, you need special expertise here, not just someone looking to profit from your misfortune. Tom Bryant in Maine is your safest option, if not the most expedient one.

The problem with fixing the engine. Is car has multiple rust spots starting. It needs a complete paint job. This project will come out 10k or so if I want to do it correctly. I’m not hands on handy with cars. So labor gonna eat up a bunch. I’m contemplating selling it and waiting for a better example that has been restored.

If you have a safe place to store it, it’s a great source of parts.

Are any valves bent? Any valve head impressions in the piston tops? Is it local? Can you see it run? Or at least check the compression?
