Head Rebuild
Here is a pic of the head off my spare motor (153K miles). I will be looking for a shop to rebuild it next week. There seems to be a crack between each of the valves and white debris around the intake valve on six. Any advise when I take it in so I somewhat know what I'm talking about. Hope the picture shows up, took me longer to get photobucket to work than pull the head.

Aluminum head rebuilders in Portland Oregon is where I get mine done if I'm not assembling the head myself. Last one I did was for my 82 242 build, to have the head completely rebuilt with cam was $535 I believe. They will also ship the head rebuilt in a very nice and well packaged box.
I would de carbon the cylinder head face and check for cracks in cylinder head around the combustion inserts, also check the inserts for cracks. The cracks between the valves are normal as long as there not huge. Check the flatness of the head and also check the cam journals to see if they are all in line (if the head was warped before and then cylinder head shaved to make flat again the cam will rock in its journals) Hope that helps.

Head Rebuild
Great that helps a lot. Local shop has quoted $1000.00 minimum. Been quite awhile since they have seen one. Do I just take a wire wheel to it to clean the chambers?
Thanks again |

Brake clean and bristle pad works good. Don't want to mar up the gasket surface to bad.

I keep wondering, Is it okay to use regular gasoline to soak the head in? Recently, soaking parts in a large plastic bin full of gasoline beautifully decarboned one of my poopy full intakes and it dries stuff too (evaporates) and leaves no residue (i think)....
But you cant use it near electric equipment and no smoking is allowed lol. All dirt and all corrosion/rust and oil and carbon all disappeared.....Cheap too. |
