Default Towing Caravan/large trailer With Automatic

Admin, if im in the wrong section please move and accept my apologies, i wasn't sure where to post

I am after some advice on towing with the D24TIC Volvo 940 Automatic (no overdrive)

I know my old b230t struggled towing a caravan and i cant decide if its worth putting the towbar on the D24, i realise it will be slow, thats no bother, but will the auto box struggle, constantly kicking down and changing up, getting too hot etc etc like the overdrive box did on the B230t?

Should i avoid towing with the d24/auto combination, or do they tow well?

Your advice guys would be really helpful

Can you describe it a little, what exactly would you be towing behind your td?
I think i had a very similar thread on towing.

I remember, Euro towing rules are tough too!!!

Do you think this will be ok? I'm mainly just concerned about the auto box handling it? I've read that they can overheat and become a nightmare to drive, probably what used to happed with my b230

The ZF 4hp22l is quite different than what you probably had in your b230. They are quite solid, as long as you don't rev the engine in P or N. You could retrofit an external AT cooler for insurance. Do not fit an external filter as the ZF reverses its external flow during lockup engagement.

When towing do not neglect to maintain the brakes in tiptop condition.

That's great, thanks for the advice. I'll put the towbar on and give her a try.
